Novak Djokovic ‘infuriated’ John Isner to progress to Shanghai Masters quarter-finals

Novak Djokovic booked his place in the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals with a convincing 7-5, 6-3 victory over John Isner.

The match went exactly as expected as Isner attempt to serve his way into the last eight.

But he was up against arguably the best returner of all time as Djokovic continued his 100 per cent record of breaking Isner’s serve in all of their 12 meetings.

And former British tennis player Naomi Cavaday, who was co-commentating on for Amazon Prime, believes the Serbian frustrated Isner.

“It was such a complete performance from the world No 1 in every area,” she said.

“We know he relishes playing somebody like a John Isner.

“He loves the challenge and knows he is the best returner in the world and to come up against one of the best returners in the world is exactly what he wants to do.

“He consistently got the return back pretty much where he wanted. It was a sensational returning display.

“He infuriated Isner and took everything away from him. He neutralised it and my word, is he looking sharp.”

Djokovic will face the winner of Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-finals.

And Djokovic rates both players very highly.

“But there is Felix [Auger-Aliassime] and Denis [Shapovalov] and Hubert [Hubert] and guys like this that are playing really well, and on a given day they can really beat anybody.

“I’m very pleasantly surprised by the level of consistency of especially Felix and Denis, you know, playing throughout the entire year, staying healthy and playing well, and being professional, committed. That’s what you want to see.”

Meanwhile, Djokovic remains on course to meet Roger Federer in Sunday’s final.
