NJ man charged with stabbing elderly roommate to death

A New Jersey man has been charged with stabbing his 74-year-old roommate to death, authorities said Friday.

Louis Gargiso, 38, was charged with murder and related offenses in the stabbing death of Robert Sunris at the home they shared in Jackson Township.

The incident unfolded early Friday morning, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said in a news release.

Police responded to a report of an unconscious male in a residence on Maple St. just before 6 a.m. When responding officers arrived at the scene they found the victim, later identified as Sunris, with an apparent stab wound.

A knife was also found near the body, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer and Jackson Township Police Chief Matthew Kunz said in a joint statement.

A post-mortem exam by the Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office later confirmed the cause of the victim’s death to be a stab wound. The manner of death was ruled a homicide.

Gargiso was arrested at the scene and transported to the Ocean County Jail, where he’s awaiting a detention hearing.

A motive for the stabbing has not been given.
