Former GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley mourned her dad’s death this Father’s Day.
“This morning I had to say goodbye to the smartest, sweetest, kindest, most decent man I have ever known,” Haley posted Sunday on X. “My heart is heavy knowing he is gone.”
The cause of Ajit Singh Randhawa’s death wasn’t specified. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1969 — three years before Haley was born, according to Politico.
“He taught his kids the importance of faith, hard work, and grace,” Haley wrote. “He was an amazing husband of 64 years, a loving grandfather and great grandfather, and the best father to his four children.”
Randhawa lived to see his daughter become the governor of South Carolina in 2011 before she was made the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations in 2017. In February 2023, Haley launched a campaign to represent the Republican party in November’s presidential election. She suspended those efforts in March.
Haley, 52, called her dad’s life a “blessing” in her bittersweet farewell.
“Happy Father’s Day Dad,” she wrote. “We will miss you dearly.”
Haley said last month she would support Donald Trump in November’s election. The former president defeated her soundly in their Republican party primary, which included Trump questioning where Haley was born and seemingly mocking her birth name, Nimarata Nikki Randhawa.
