The NFL determined that the phone number leak came from the Atlanta Falcons.
The son of defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich reportedly got into an open iPad and got Sanders’ number off of it.
From there, he conducted the infamous prank call to trick Sanders into thinking he was drafted.
The NFL didn’t take this security breach lightly, and handed out heavy fines to the Falcons and Ulbrigh.
Atlanta has been ordered to pay $250,000 for the data breach, while Ulbrich is being fined $100,000.
The fines were for “failing to prevent the disclosure of confidential information distributed to the club in advance of the NFL Draft.”
Neither Ulbrich nor the Falcons will appeal the fine.
The defensive coordinator spoke about the situation at a press conference on Friday.
“My actions of not protecting confidential data were inexcusable,” Ulbrich said.
“My son’s actions were absolutely inexcusable, and for that we are both deeply sorry.
“I promise my son and I will work hard to demonstrate we are better than this.”
Ulbrich said he wasn’t aware of what happened until after the draft was over, and that he was “not happy and shocked” when he found out.
He reported the incident directly to the Falcons and worked to contact Shedeur and his father Deion Sanders.
Ulbrich said the Sanders family was “amazingly gracious — more gracious than they needed to be in a moment like this.”
The defensive coordinator’s son, Jax, called Sanders separately to apologize and released his own statement on social media.
“I’m so sorry I took away from your moment, it was selfish and childish,” he said.
