According to the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, which represents the families of those who were taken, 97 of the roughly 250 people taken hostage during the attack on October 7, 2023, remain in custody of Hamas terrorists.
While some have been killed, rescued by IDF forces, or returned home in an exchange, many remain unaccounted for.
It is not yet known how many have died in captivity. In some cases, deaths have been reported but their bodies have not been returned home.
A number of people have been confirmed to have died, including on September 1, when the IDF announced that its forces had recovered the bodies of six hostages: Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi and Master Sgt Ori Danino. Their bodies were located in an underground tunnel in the Rafah area, the IDF said.
One June 3, the IDF announced it had informed the families of four men: Amiram Cooper, Chaim Peri, Yoram Metzger and Nadav Popplewell, that they were no longer alive and their bodies were being held by Hamas.
On December 16, the Israeli military expressed “deep remorse” after soldiers mistakenly killed three hostages in northern Gaza who had escaped from their captors. They were named as Yotam Haim, 28, Samer Talalka, 22, and Alon Shamriz, 26.
The full list of hostages can be seen on the website of the Hostages and Missing Families Forum.
