A common beauty product that you likely have in your bathroom could be the key to rescuing your favourite T-shirt.
We all possess at least one piece of clothing with vinyl print, whether it’s a university graduation hoodie or a memento tee from your most recent holiday (think of the I heart NYC ones every tourist purchases). However, over time, the plastic-like material can begin to peel and crack, often leading us to discard our most cherished items.
But, there’s a simple and inexpensive solution to keep the vinyl intact and prevent it from flaking….
Mum Bree took to TikTok to demonstrate how she preserves her children’s treasured T-shirts using just acetone nail polish remover and a cotton pad. “Alright mums, here’s a hack for not only your kid’s clothes, but the whole family,” she said before applying acetone to a cotton pad.
“Take the cotton pad [and] press it firmly on the place it’s cracking and it fixes it just like that,” she continued. “For the second step, you’re going to need parchment paper and an iron or a steamer.”
“Place the parchment paper over your shirt and then take the iron and rub it all around. After smoothing the iron over the entire shirt, you’ll want to press firmly on each individual spot. Adding heat is really going to lock everything in. That way it doesn’t continue to crack and it doesn’t get any worse.”
You can snap up acetone from most beauty stores and supermarkets, including Superdrug, which is currently offering a 50ml bottle for a mere 99p. A pack of 50 cotton pads from the same retailer will cost you just 60p.
As for parchment paper, you can pick up a 15m roll from Tesco for £2, should you not already have some in your kitchen cupboard.
Scores of viewers rushed to the comments section, with many expressing regret that they found out about the hack only after they had thrown away their damaged vinyl clothing. “You saved my life,” exclaimed one thrilled individual.
Another concurred, posting: “Great hack. Thanks for sharing.”
A third chimed in: “That’s cool, thanks dude.” Meanwhile, a fourth shared: “I’m going to try this on my favourite band T-shirt.”
