Mould on silicone sealants is ‘eradicated completely’ in 10 minutes with 1 kitchen staple

Mould loves to cling to a range of areas in the bathroom like walls, grout and sealants. Once set, these sealants develop a rubbery texture and become a hotbed for black mould growth due to constant moisture exposure.

Silicone sealants, commonly used to join surfaces like plastic, metal, and glass, are a staple in bathrooms to keep water away from fixtures.

The persistent mould on the white sealant can be tough to clean and may leave behind unsightly stains.

Cristina Solis, a sustainability consultant at Green Hive, has come to the rescue with a simple cleaning method that requires “minimal effort” and uses white vinegar – a “natural and effective cleaning agent”.

To tackle mouldy bathroom silicone sealants, you’ll need white vinegar, water, a spray bottle, and an old toothbrush.

Start by whipping up a vinegar solution in a spray bottle, mixing equal parts of white vinegar and water.

Spray the solution generously over the mould-infested sealant to fully cover it.

Let the vinegar work its magic on the mould for about 10 minutes. Cristina noted: “During this time, it breaks down the mould and mildew, making the removal process easier.”

After the time is up, get to work on scrubbing the mould gently with an old toothbrush.

The expert advised: “The bristles of the toothbrush will help remove the mould without damaging the sealant.”

Afterwards, it’s important to rinse the sealant well with clean water to get rid of any lingering vinegar and loosened mould.

This method should have “eradicated all traces of mould completely” for those tackling serious mould issues. If the problem persists, a few repeats may be necessary.

Cristina also suggests an alternative of using baking soda instead of white vinegar as it works well on grout.

She claimed: “Baking soda, a natural cleaning agent, can effectively kill mould and neutralise its odour.”

To use this method, mix a quarter tablespoon of baking soda with a cup of water and apply the mixture with a spray bottle for even distribution.

Scrub the affected area thoroughly, then rinse off to prevent any powdery residue. To “prevent future mould growth”, ensure the surface is dried completely.
