Monty Don has taken to his blog this month to share a few gardening tasks that need carrying out in November – and one focuses on your patio and paving.
Maintaining the cleanliness of your patio slabs and pathways often takes a backseat compared to other gardening tasks.
However, it’s essential to remember that neglecting proper care can lead to the growth of green algae and moss on patios, stone floors, walls, and fencing.
The period from late autumn to winter is typically when algae and moss growth is most common, although it can occur during any wet spell or in shaded, humid areas.
Algae tend to thrive on irregular and soft surfaces rather than smooth, hard ones.
According to Monty, the primary reason to eliminate algae from pathways is that it can be “dangerous” during this time of year.
He explained: “At this time of year brick and stone paths can be very slippery and dangerous.
“This is due to algae that grows on the surface, especially if wet and shaded and at this time of year they may stay wet and slippery for months.”
To minimise the risk of slipping, Monty recommends using a pressure hose (available for hire by the day) to wash off the algae, citing it as “the best way”.
While a pressure washer can effectively remove algae from patios, it’s crucial to be aware that it can also dislodge grout.
To safeguard and prolong the life of patio slabs, grout plays a vital role. When using a pressure washer, be cautious to avoid damaging the grout, although accidental contact won’t cause significant issues.
Following algae removal, Monty recommended using sand to repair and refill the grout, effectively blocking gaps between the block paving to prevent regrowth.
He advised: “When this is done brush in sharp sand. If the path is brick or stone the porous surface will absorb some of the sand.
“A quicker – but still quite laborious – alternative is simply to work sand in with a stiff brush without the washing.”
Monty emphasised that this method is a “very effective way” to clean a patio and ensure a path’s safety “without resorting to chemicals” or spending hours scrubbing.
