Michelle Obama praised as BEST ambassador to US by Anna Wintour who ignores Melania

The former First Lady has featured on the cover of the magazine three times but Melania Trump hasn’t. Ms Wintour hasn’t asked Melania to be on the cover since she became the First Lady, in a move which signals she prefers Michelle. She gushed about Michelle in an interview while passing on questions about Melania.

Ms Wintour was asked about Melania’s wardrobe following her trip to the UK.

But the fashion giant told The Economist’s podcast: “I think First Lady Michelle Obama really was so incredible in every decision she made about fashion.

“She supported young American designers.

“She supported designers, indeed, from all over the world. She was the best ambassador this country could possibly have in many ways, obviously, way beyond fashion.”

However, the interviewer pressed for Ms Wintour’s thoughts on Melania.

Anne McElvoy said: “But she’s not the First Lady now. So what about the one you’ve got now?”

Ms Wintour added: “To me Michelle is the example that I admire.”

Twitter users were quick to notice Ms Wintour dodging questions about Melania.

It comes as Ms Wintour, a longtime Democrat, hinted the magazine may never feature Melania again after her cover in 2005 following her marriage to Donald Trump.

Ms Wintour told CNN: “You have to stand up for what you believe in and you have to take a point of view.

“I think it’s very, very important to have a point of view, and we profile women in the magazine that we believe in.

“After the defeat of Secretary Clinton in 2016, we believe that women should have a leadership position and we intend to support them.”

Melania’s spokeswomen, Stephanie Grisham, responded: “To be on the cover of Vogue doesn’t define Mrs Trump. She’s been there, done that long before she was First Lady.”
