Greek officials have disclosed “preliminary” findings from their probe into the disappearance and death of beloved TV presenter Dr Michael Mosley, casting doubt on one of the key theories about his tragic demise while vacationing with his spouse.
The mystery surrounding Dr Mosley’s death on a Greek hillside, a stone’s throw away from a bustling tourist location, deepened after his body was found last Sunday, with CCTV from a nearby beach eatery capturing the 67 year old father of four as he “making his way down a rocky slope close to a fence before he falls out of view”.
A cameraman revisiting his footage five days on made the grim discovery of the health guru’s body, mere steps from safety, hidden by a fence. Reports in the Greek media on Monday evening suggested that police had received CCTV showing the moments leading up to the respected health expert’s death a full four days before he was eventually located.
The proprietor of the Agia Marina establishment near where Dr Mosley was found informed journalists that he submitted his CCTV to the authorities on Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Live News reported that although police confirmed viewing the footage, they initially identified nothing more than a small “dot”, which was later confirmed to be Dr Mosley.
In an official statement, the Greek police have confirmed that their “preliminary” investigation does not support the theory that British presenter Dr Michael Mosley fell from a rocky cliff while on the island of Symi, reports the Mirror.
The Hellenic Police responded to claims that they had held onto crucial video footage for several days, stating: “The reality is that the video footage came into the possession of the Greek Police after the body was found.”
But, speaking from their headquarters, they added: “It is emphasised that from the preliminary investigation material so far, it does not appear that the British presenter fell from a height”
Greek Coroner Grigoris Leo, who has yet to officially publish his findings due to delays caused by the time gap between the death and the discovery of the body, but suggested to the local press: “The most likely cause of death is from natural causes.”
One unnamed police source spoke to The Mirror and indicated that the interim findings make it challenging to determine the exact cause of the 67 year old’s demise.
They disclosed: “The way the body was positioned suggests that first he sat down and then he died. There is no indication that he was hit by something in the head for example, or that he collapsed while walking.”
