An appearance from Donald Trump’s wife Melania has stunned members of the public because of how “awkward” it was.
The former First Lady’s appearance at the political rally in New York City on October 27 was a surprise to many as it marked her first public sighting at a rally on this election cycle. Melania’s elusive nature on the campaign trail has since been noted by members of the public who suggested she and Trump were like “actors without chemistry”. Body language and behavioural expert Darren Stanton has since suggested there is reason behind the “uncomfortable” appearance.
Many suggested Melania had been paid to appear at the event while others say the rigid performance from the 54-year-old is a tell of how much she dislikes the spotlight. The cringe-inducing moment Trump and Melania kissed on stage was subject to much criticism, but the speech Melania gave, where she dubbed Trump the “next commander in chief,” was also revealing.
Expert Stanton, speaking on behalf of Slingo, said: “Melania is not unconfident but doesn’t like to be in this sort of situation and wants to get away. A number of different body language signs show us this.
“Melania is going through protocol for her husband. I think she felt very uncomfortable and awkward. She’s not too happy to show any public displays of affection, it makes her feel uncomfortable.
“At one point, we see Trump pull his wife towards him, to hug him, but her arms are stretched to the side. It’s almost like she is trying to make herself as rigid as possible, therefore, she feels uncomfortable. It’s very awkward, she doesn’t really want to hug him. If it was reciprocal, and if they were on the same frequency, they’d have their arms both around each other. There’s a disparity in their actions.”
Further details were revealed by Stanton, who claims her “non verbal” gestures are contradictory with what she says in her speech. Praise for Trump was inevitably heard in Melania’s speech but her body language tells a different story, according to expert Stanton.
“Content wise, she’s saying these really fantastic things about Trump being the next president,” he said. “However, non verbally, if you turned the sound down and watched it that way, you wouldn’t think she was being complimentary. Principally, what she’s saying is not congruent with her body language.”
Further troubles with her speech were seen also as the ex-President’s wife was not “animated” while making her speech, leading body language expert Stanton to question whether the pair are a “solid unit.”
He said: “Melania isn’t animated when she’s speaking. People tend to talk with their hands and punctuate when speaking in front of big crowds. No animation, hands to her side. She’s very monotone, no change in pitch or speed, no passion in her voice. The smiles appear to be fake smiles, we’re not seeing the laugh lines which show them as genuine.
“A lot of the affection Trump shows towards her is non reciprocal. If she did really want to be there, there would be a lot more passion, hugs would be reciprocated, great eye contact, there wouldn’t be this awkwardness between them. There’s nothing about the piece which shows them as a solid unit. It’s all very disjointed. She definitely doesn’t want to be there.”
