Furious McDonald’s staff have been caught on camera getting revenge on a suspected thief by repeatedly beating him with a broom.
According to staff, the man stole cash before returning “three times in 15 minutes” to attack workers at the fast food outlet on in New York.
Several employees decided to take the law into their own hands and pummelled the suspect to the ground before spraying him with a fire extinguisher.
As he got back to his feet he hurled a glass bottle at the restaurant, breaking one of the windows before fleeing.
A worker who was caught up in the melee claimed he suffered a shoulder injury after being struck by a bottle.
He said it was the second time the man had targeted the store in the space of a week.
Staff let him leave with the money and called the police, he said, but were forced to “defend themselves” after the man returned several times and started throwing missiles at them behind the counter.
Dramatic video of the incident was filmed by a female employee and shows the suspect – wearing a light blue T-shirt, jeans and a hat – pacing outside the restaurant as staff guard the entrance.
Suddenly, an employee sneaks up behind him armed with a broomstick and hits him across the back with it before a colleague rushes in and knocks him to the ground.
He then sits on top of the man and punches him repeatedly while he is down as the other worker strikes the suspect again and again with the stick.
A concerned customer is heard shouting “somebody stop him” before a manager runs outside holding a powder fire extinguisher and lets it off in the suspect’s face.
Another customer asks if the man tried to rob the store “with a glass bottle”.
To which the woman filming replies: “Yeah, tried to stab me. I was about to take his order.”
After the dust clears the suspect is seen returning to the restaurant holding a glass bottle. He hurls it against a window near the entrance and breaks the glass, apparently injuring one employee as horrified customers scream.
He is then sprayed again with the extinguisher before being chased away.
The suspect was later arrested, staff claim.
Speaking out about the incident, the injured employee said: “I now have a torn rotator cuff from being hit with a glass bottle to my arm. So we beat him, maybe it was too much but he came back. That was his third time in 15 minutes coming while waiting for the cops.
“We let him take the money, we called the cops and he left. He came back with a bottle and threw it behind the register then went outside looking for more stuff to throw. That’s when he got beaten up.
“This is the second time he robbed the store in a week but yesterday (Weds) he robbed it and got away then came back in and started throwing glass bottles. At what point do you defend yourself? By the way he was getting hit wit a plastic broomstick which does not hurt at all.
“Try having a guy come with a weapon to your job to hurt you.”
Some viewers praised the staff but many thought their response was excessive and suggested it may cost them their jobs.
One wrote: “That guy can now play the victim and sue and those workers can get fired and even arrested for assault.”
Another said: “The employees will be fired. You can’t assault a customer even if they are robbing you.”
A third added: “Somebody get the robber a lawyer, he’s about to get paid.”
McDonald’s has been approached for comment.
