Mason Greenwood announcement hints at surprise Man Utd transfer twist

Getafe president Angel Torres has revealed that the club are optimistic that they will soon tie down Mason Greenwood for another season. The Manchester United forward has been heavily linked with a permanent transfer this summer but isn’t expected to return to the La Liga outfit.

Greenwood is among the first-team players likely to be included in an Old Trafford clearout as INEOS push to raise funds through sales.

United’s budget is limited amid pressure imposed by Financial Fair Play and the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Casemiro, Jadon Sancho, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Victor Lindelof are among the players also thought to be in the shop window.

Greenwood’s future has drawn plenty of intrigue, though, after an impressive season-long loan at Getafe last term.

The 22-year-old registered 10 goals and six assists in 36 appearances for the Madrid-based outfit, reportedly attracting blockbuster interest.

Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Benfica, Juventus, Lazio and Napoli have all been credited as suitors.

Lazio are reportedly the most advanced in the race after opening talks with United over a £30million deal earlier this week.

Getafe are also known to be keen on keeping Greenwood for another year despite the daunting competition for his signature in the transfer market.

And despite Lazio’s push to sign the former United No. 11, Torres, Getafe’s president, has confidently spoken about the prospect of retaining his services.

“We have 15 in the squad plus Greenwood, who we hope to give good news about soon and I hope will stay another year,” Torres revealed at a Getafe kit launch.

“As the press says, there are many offers, and we will abide by what Manchester United say.

“It looks like he will continue for another year. Every day that passes there are more possibilities but you have to be cautious.”

United reportedly value Greenwood at around £40m, which would enter the books as pure profit due to his status as a homegrown talent.

Lazio’s opening offer didn’t reach that asking price, and the prospect of a United return if their demands aren’t met hasn’t yet been ruled out.

But the Red Devils could be willing to accept another loan move if there was an obligation to buy included in his contract.

Greenwood is under contract at Old Trafford until next summer, but United have the option to extend it by a further 12 months.

It strengthens the club’s negotiating position in the coming months, and despite Torres’ claims, Getafe are considered strong outsiders.
