The man who attacked Paul Pelosi in the home he shared with ex-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without parole.
David DePape, 44, was already serving a 30-year sentence on federal charges when he was convicted and handed the life sentence on several state charges.
“It’s my intention that Mr. DePape will never get out of prison, he can never be paroled,” Judge Harry Dorfman said at Tuesday’s hearing.
Speaking in his own defense, DePape rambled about Sept. 11 being an inside job, his ex-wife being replaced by a body double, and his government-provided attorneys conspiring against him.
DePape broke into the Pelosis’ San Francisco home in October 2022 and threatened then-82-year-old Paul Pelosi with a hammer, demanding to know “Where is Nancy?” She was in Washington, D.C. at the time.
DePape attacked Pelosi with the hammer, cracking his skull and bruising his arms and legs. Responding police officers captured the end of the attack on body cameras.
Prior to his state trial, DePape was convicted in federal court of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assaulting a federal official’s family member. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison on those charges.
But that didn’t end DePape’s criminal journey, as he still faced state charges in California. Though some of the charges were tossed in June to satisfy double jeopardy rules, he was still convicted of aggravated kidnapping, first-degree burglary and false imprisonment of an elder, among other charges.
During his federal trial, DePape admitted that he planned to hold Nancy Pelosi and “interrogate” her about a right-wing conspiracy theory known as “Russiagate.”
