Everton want Emre Can

Everton are considering a £30million raid for former Liverpool star Emre Can who recently rejected a move to Manchester United. According to the Daily Mirror, Can is Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti’s top target after being told by Juve that he is surplus to requirements amid the ongoing January transfer window.

Inter Milan have also identified the Germany international as a key target but are unwilling to meet their Serie A rivals’ buy-out clause or the player’s £100,000-a-week wages.

That has given Everton a significant boost in their bid to improve their midfield following a poor start to the campaign under former manager Marco Silva, who was replaced by Ancelotti in December.

However, Can’s Liverpool past could play a critical role in negotiations as it was his four-year stint at Anfield that made him choose against a move to United this month.

A possible deal with Everton could fall through for the same reason due to the club’s intense rivalry with their Merseyside counterparts.

Roy Keane slams Anthony Martial

Liverpool’s win over Manchester United on Sunday proved Anthony Martial is not good enough for the Red Devils, says Roy Keane.

“You’re always going to get one big moment,” Keane said on Sky Sports.

“Martial, you’ve come to Man United, the big striker scoring in the big moments, bang, there you go.

“To me that sums up his career in a nutshell at Man United. Excellent build-up play but you hit that target, no excuses, you hit that target.

“The big players at Man United, the big strikers who are remembered by these supporters out there, certainly hit the target and hit the back of the net.

“That’s why that guy is not quite good enough for Man United. In that moment there, summed him up.”

Sir Alex Ferguson impressed

Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson is impressed with three youngsters at Old Trafford.

He told the Manchester Evening News: “I think it’s the area in which United have always done well – giving young players the opportunity.

“You find that when you give them the opportunity, they don’t let you down.

“They’ve shown that. Brandon Williams and [Mason] Greenwood and [Scott] McTominay, they’ve done exceptionally well.”

Mauricio Pochettino tipped to head to Man Utd

Mauricio Pochettino has been tipped to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United boss because the Argentine’s style of coaching is similar to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. That’s according to BBC Sport pundit Jermaine Jenas.

“I’m seeing players like Fred start to look like he can do a job,” he said.

“Daniel James has been brilliant. So the signs are good for Manchester United and part of me thinks stick with the process and stick with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“But I’d struggle to ignore Pochettino. He’s closer to what Klopp is than Solskjaer is.

“And it would be a quicker process to get that team playing a certain type of football that would win a title.

“Klopp built a couple of teams at Dortmund. He won a league there, got them into a Champions League final.

“He was a winner with really good young players. He developed these players.

“Look at what he’s done [at Liverpool] with Andrew Robertson, Georginio Wijnaldum – who got relegated with Newcastle – and look how Jordan Henderson has evolved over the past two years.”

Bruno Fernandes update

Manchester United have scheduled more talks with Sporting Lisbon over a deal for Bruno Fernandes. The Red Devils will hold more negotiations over the attacking midfielder this week. Express Sport understands United’s move for Fernandes has recently stalled.

The two parties had looked close to agreeing a deal on Friday and United sources admit there is still a will to get the business done.

And according to Sky Sports, United and Sporting will hold more transfer talks this week.

They say Fernandes is desperate to head to Old Trafford before the transfer window shuts.

Sky Sports add that there’s a willingness from all parties to get a deal done this month.

Striker signing backed

Gary Neville says Manchester United “desperately” need a striker after their 2-0 loss to rivals Liverpool, especially after Marcus Rashford’s injury which will see him miss three months.

Neville said on Sky Sports: “That would be devastating news for Manchester United. They have struggled to get into the market for a centre-forward.

“They desperately needed a striker to replace Lukaku and they haven’t been able to get one.

“United have to go into the market. They need someone up there with a physical presence and a bit more maturity – and they need another body.”

Director of football plan

Manchester United are hoping to secure a deal to appoint Luis Campos as the club’s new director of football.

The Red Devils have long been linked with appointing a head of football having interviewed a number of people for the post.

United have opted against the traditional recruitment process which has now become common practice in European football in recent years.

Former United player such as Darren Fletcher, Rio Ferdinand and Edwin van der Sar had all been interviewed over the past 18 months.

But The Sun now report United have settled on Campos, who is currently Lille’s director of football.
