Man Utd player ratings vs West Ham: Two flops score 4/10 as Erik ten Hag stars disappoint

West Ham were there for the taking in the first half, but Manchester United’s familiar woes in front of goal cost them dearly after Jarrod Bowen’s stoppage-time penalty sealed all three points for the hosts.

A dominant opening 45 minutes for the visitors were not rewarded with a goal and they were punished when substitute Crysensio Summerville broke the deadlock, tapping home at the back post. They were, however, nearly rescued from a humiliating result by Casemiro who headed in from close range.

Only for Matthijs de Ligt to have fouled Danny Ings inside the penalty area according to a lengthy VAR review, with the Dutch defender furious as he protested that minimal contact was made.

It is a stretch to describe this match as ‘El Sackico’ a day after Barcelona tormented Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, but both Erik ten Hag and Julen Lopetegui have been under increasing pressure, with only the latter escaping further scrutiny on Sunday afternoon.

United have lost 18 Premier League away games under Ten Hag, winning 17, and now won just two of their last 18 trips to London. The capital proved to be another difficult test for the Red Devils, who have scored just eight goals in their first nine league matches while continuing to languish in the bottom half of the table.

Goalkeeper

Andre Onana: 6

Confident and competent when called upon and positive with the ball at his feet, but Onana was largely untroubled by West Ham’s attack that was missing the suspended Mohammed Kudus aside from the two goals.

Took an uncomfortable knock to the head in a collision with Michail Antonio shortly into the second half, but got back to his feet and could do little to prevent Summerville stealing in at the back post to score. Came ever-so-close to stopping Bowen’s penalty but was fingertips away.

Defence

Diogo Dalot: 4

Almost the entire London Stadium were fearing the worst when Dalot went through on goal and flicked the ball over Fabianski, only to somehow miss the target with the entire goal gaping.

It is a miss that will live long in the memory of all those inside the ground, not least Dalot himself, who should have broken the deadlock.

To make matters worse, Summerville was his man at the back post when Ings got the first touch to a cross which attracted the attention of Dalot, with the goalscorer able to go unnoticed until he turned the ball home.

Matthijs de Ligt: 5

A quiet evening for the Dutch defender until he was launched into controversy, with the referee and VAR deeming that he fouled Ings while in the penalty area. De Ligt was adamant that not enough contact was made, but David Coote was having none of it and Bowen subsequently tucked away the spot-kick.

Lisandro Martinez: 6

Antonio purposefully targeted the smaller of United’s two centre-backs, but Martinez made it clear that he would not be bullied by the striker and also impressed on the ball.

Noussair Mazraoui: 6

Having started at left-back for the first time in his United career, the majority of West Ham’s attacking impetus came down his flank through Bowen and Aaron Wan-Bissaka against his former team for the first time.

They got a lot of joy down that wing and ultimately created West Ham’s first goal of the game, but the Moroccan held his own in a difficult battle.

Midfield

Casemiro: 7

Handed another start despite Manuel Ugarte’s impressive performance against Fenerbahce, but created a good chance with a creative piece of play for Fernandes in the first half and kept Lucas Paqueta quiet in the first half, before being alert to Joshua Zirkzee’s header before nodding in United’s only goal.

Christian Eriksen: 6

A quiet afternoon for Eriksen but ticked along play nicely. His influence waned in the second half, however, with Tomas Soucek brought on to help Edson Alvarez and Guido Rodriguez in the middle of the pitch.

Bruno Fernandes: 8

Back from suspension and taking his No. 10 spot back from Mazraoui, Fernandes immediately showcased what United were missing in Turkey, creating a big chance for Garnacho moments after kick-off.

By the eighth minute he had come inches away from latching onto a superb through ball and then put Garnacho through on goal again, only for the Argentine this time to miss the target completely.

He was at his lively best and illustrated why he is so crucial to the Red Devils, their playmaker, talisman, metronome. Only let down by wayward finshing.

Attack

Marcus Rashford: 5

England interim boss Lee Carsley was in attendance, with Rashford among several stars out to impress, though a Three Lions recall remains unlikely after an anonymous display. He was replaced by Amad Diallo before the hour mark.

Rasmus Hojlund: 5

Ten Hag admitted pre-match that Hojlund was not 100 per cent, which was evident as he struggled to impact play or get on the end of any chances created for his fellow forwards.

There was little surprise when Zirkzee replaced him when United were chasing a goal and the Dutchman immediately made an impact with an assist.

Alejandro Garnacho: 4

Rattled the crossbar inside the opening two minutes to make a lively start, but Garnacho really should have found the back of the net with plenty of time inside the penalty area.

He was once again on his favoured left-wing but squandered another early chance when one-on-one with Fabianski only to fire wide.

Rashford has made no secret that he prefers to play on the left also and he undoubtedly would have fancied himself to find that back of the net from both chances.

Dalot had the game’s biggest chance but Garnacho was just as wasteful, a more clinical finisher would have ensured that United were out of sight inside the first 10 minutes. Also gave the ball away with a misplaced pass to Fernandes that West Ham latched onto, before marching on goal and scoring.
