Man Utd 'increasingly likely' to enter Erik ten Hag contract talks after U-turn

Manchester United have reportedly put no timescale on making a final decision on Erik ten Hag’s future despite a previous expectation that an announcement was on the horizon. And the Dutchman is said to be in line for talks over a new contract at Old Trafford if INEOS stick with him beyond the summer.

Two weeks have passed since United’s shock FA Cup triumph against Manchester City through an academy double from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

Ten Hag’s status dominated coverage in the build-up, and it’s been the same story after the momentous day at Wembley Stadium.

However, supporters are growing frustrated at a lack of clarity as INEOS continue to ponder whether to stick or twist in the dugout at the start of their regime.

On Wednesday, The Guardian reported that United were due to announce a decision on Ten Hag by the end of the week.

It was claimed that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS’ post-season review wouldn’t extend into next week, but that now appears to be the case.

A fresh report from the Manchester Evening News states that no timescale has been put on completing the review as they complete a thorough analysis of the 2023/24 campaign.

If INEOS decide to hand Ten Hag the final year of his contract, it is said to be likely that the 54-year-old will enter discussions over a new contract.

That outcome has been described as more likely the longer the review is delayed.

But Ten Hag, currently on holiday, is reportedly just as keen for clarity as the fanbase and other club staff.

INEOS are unlikely to dismiss the Dutchman if they don’t believe any potential replacement represents an upgrade.

The report adds that United’s new decision-makers are reluctant to rush to a decision without a clear succession plan, suggesting no candidates currently stand out.

The Red Devils have reportedly held talks with potential replacements in recent weeks – before and during the review of the past season.

Kieran McKenna was among the candidates but committed his future to Ipswich Town by signing a new contract, having overseen back-to-back promotions to the Premier League.

Gareth Southgate is a hotly-tipped candidate, but he won’t be available until after he guides England into Euro 2024, which will run until mid-July.

Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Frank and Roberto De Zerbi have also been touted as potential targets if United decide to part ways with Ten Hag.
