Man Utd chief Ed Woodward handed transfer demand after Scott McTominay suffers knee injury

Scott McTominay suffered a ligament injury in his knee during Manchester United’s Boxing Day win over Newcastle United. The Scot was hauled off in the second half before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed the worst, leaving United fans desperate for the club to bring in a new midfielder in the upcoming January transfer window.

United were already expected to dip into the January transfer market, as Solskjaer continues his squad overhaul at Old Trafford.

The club tried to sign a centre-midfielder during the Summer window, after reportedly making a move for Sporting SP’s Bruno Fernandes.

However, the Portuguese club held firm and refused to let the playmaker leave, though it is possible the Old Trafford outfit will try again either in January or the summer.

The centre of midfield is an area United have been lacking in this season, through injuries and poor performances.

After the injury suffered by Paul Pogba earlier in the year, they have been forced into playing makeshift trios in the middle of the park.

Fred has failed to live up to the £52million price the club paid for him, and 21-year-old McTominay has been one of the players of the season so far.

However, he collided with Sean Longstaff – who was a target for United during the summer – in the second half of the 4-1 win at Old Trafford.

After doing so, he was taken off and replaced by Pogba, who himself is returning from a lengthy spell away from the side through injury.

And after the game, Solskjaer confirmed that the academy graduate has suffered a knee ligament injury – which could keep him out of the side for a long time.

Fans immediately took to Twitter to beg club chief executive Ed Woodward to get the chequebook out in January and sign reinforcements in midfield.

“Such a shame for Scott, he was essential for us this season. New midfielder in January is a necessity,” one wrote.

Another demanded: “Now if you don’t buy 2 midfielders in Jan, Ed Woodward will probably be a dead man walking.”
