Man charged in hatchet attack on McDonald’s employees in Chicago

A Chicago man is facing charges after allegedly attacking three workers at a McDonald’s on the city’s southwest side.

The incident occurred Sunday morning around 8 a.m. when the suspect went inside the restaurant and demanded free food. When the employees refused, the suspect allegedly attacked them with a hatchet.

Two of the workers, an 18-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman, were hospitalized in good condition. Another 45-year-old woman was hospitalized in serious condition. Their conditions as of Tuesday afternoon were not known.

Moe Cannon, a bystander, told CBS Chicago he gave the suspect a dollar to get a coffee before he went inside the McDonald’s and saw him again when he fled the scene.

“I saw a little blood on the ax, and he was smiling. He was smiling and walking with the axe like this and eating a cookie,” Cannon told the station.

Hours later, someone from across the street called to police to say the suspect had returned and was at a nearby bus terminal. When police arrived around 1 p.m., the man was taken into custody with the possible weapon.

Police said Tuesday that Jermaine Allen, 24, was charged with three felony counts of attempted murder, three counts of aggravated battery/use of a deadly weapon and three counts of aggravated battery/great bodily harm.

He was expected to make his first court appearance Tuesday.
