The US Sun understands no decision has been made yet, with talks still on-going.
The network are believed to be keeping their options open.
There are a number of names in the frame to step up onto Fox NFL Sunday.
Rob Gronkowski could take on a more regular role, instead of being on-and-off air.
Other NFL legends have also had successful stints on the show on a week-to-week basis.
LA Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford was impressive in a cameo appearance last season.

But Fox execs may also decide to not replace Johnson at all.
They could just go with the cast they have, which is already stacked.
Schrager’s move to ESPN caused a number of issues, with him now off the main and pre-show.
But they could move NFL insider Jordan Schultz to replace him into a more regular TV spot.
It was a big loss for Fox, with 42-year-old highly thought of at the network.
Michael Strahan, Curt Menefee and Howie Long are all expected to stay on.
The futures of Charissa Thompson and Erin Andrews are unclear after their contracts ended.
Talks over new deals with the pair are understood to be ongoing.
