Darwin Nunez has admitted that social media abuse prompted him to delete Liverpool-related posts online. Supporters were concerned over the striker’s happiness at Anfield when he removed several posts from his Instagram account.
Nunez was subsequently linked with a summer transfer, with some reports suggesting that the Uruguayan was unhappy at the club. He endured a tough 2023-24 campaign and faced criticism for some wasteful finishing as Jurgen Klopp’s side finished third in the Premier League.
Barcelona and Chelsea have been linked with moves for the 24-year-old. However, Nunez has now claimed that his social media activity was related to negative comments being made on his profile.
“From the moment you start playing and until you retire, there will always be someone who will criticise you,” he told Por la Jersey. “Before, I did look at them a lot and it affected me.
“Whoever says that those negative comments do not affect them is lying, those negative comments that are directed towards you will always affect you.
“They tell me everything, but I ignore those comments because they are of no use to me. I never look at the negative comments on social media, at least now I’m not looking at anything, not even the good stuff. If a game goes badly for me, I rely on my family.”
Nunez says that abuse makes him angry and that he wants to avoid showing those feelings to his family.
He added: “When things go badly for me, I get hot, but I try to laugh with my family and not show my son the anger I have, what happened in the game is already there, it’s already happened, and there is always revenge.”
Nunez has split the views of Liverpool’s fans since he arrived from Benfica for a deal rising to a potential £85million in the summer of 2022. It was a major price to pay for a player who has scored 20 goals in 65 appearances in his first two Premier League campaigns.
According to The Times, Chelsea attempted to lure Nunez to Stamford Bridge 12 months ago. However, Liverpool rebuffed the approach from the Blues. The Anfield outfit did not want to lose a player who they had ploughed so much resources into just a year prior.
But with Klopp gone, it is unclear if Nunez will fit into the plans of new head coach Arne Slot. The Dutchman is due to begin work on June 1 and will cast an eye on the squad he inherits during the pre-season campaign.
