Lidl has been a fixture at its Barnstaple Retail Park location in Devon for almost a quarter of a century.
However, with two other branches nearby, the decision has been made to close this particular store.
Located on Station Road, not to be confused with a nearby site on Old Station Road, the German-owned retailer will close its doors in a matter of days.
While a specific closure date for the supermarket has not yet been confirmed, it is anticipated that Sunday, June 30 will be the final day of trading.
A spokesperson for Lidl stated: “We can confirm that the lease of our store on Station Rd is coming to an end, and it has been proposed that the store, which first opened its doors almost a quarter of a century ago, will close at the end of June.”
They continued: “However, residents can be assured that they will still be able to access our great value products at our newer, much larger Gratton Way store and also our store on Old Station Road, both of which are close by.”
All staff members will be reassigned where possible to minimise job losses.
Both the Old Station Road and Gratton Way stores offer extended opening hours, closing at 10pm throughout the week. These two stores are only a five-minute drive away from the closing store, albeit in opposite directions.
The retail park site has garnered positive reviews on Google, with an average 4.3-star rating.
Many shoppers have praised the “great fruit and veg”, including the “good selection of foods at great prices”. Others have enjoyed shopping there thanks to the “friendly staff” who are “nice and helpful”.
Earlier this year, the South-West county lost another long-established Lidl store in the seaside resort of Paignton. Customers said they were unhappy to see the Victoria Centre supermarket axed as it was well-connected to other town centre shops.
Earlier in April, the discount supermarket chain announced plans to open hundreds of new stores across the country.
Locations expected to welcome a new Lidl branch include Bristol, Birmingham and Berwick, along with Wandsworth, Fulham and Canning Town in London.
New store openings will see the brand reach thousands of additional households across the country and grow its record-high market share further still.
