Leeds missed the chance to go second in the Championship with a 2-1 defeat to Wigan at Elland Road.

Pablo Hernandez spurned a chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot, hitting the post after Cedric Kipre was sent off for handball.

Leeds did take the lead when Patrick Bamford fired past Christian Walton but Wigan hit back through a sweet strike from Gavin Massey.

The relegation-threatened Latics then sprung another surprise when Massey headed his side into the lead, putting a huge dent in the Whites’ automatic promotion hopes.

Express Sport have rated how the Leeds players performed during their clash with Wigan, but do you agree?

Leeds United player ratings vs Wigan Athletic – Championship

GK: Kiko Casilla – 4

Rounded by Leon Clarke but did enough to put the striker off.

Not much chance with either of Massey’s strikes, but was left stranded when Reece James’ free-kick hit the bar midway through the second half.

RB: Luke Ayling – 5

Booked for a late challenge after being sold short by Roofe.

Did his best to get forward as much as possible but was reluctant to deliver the ball on several occasions.

CB: Pontus Jansson – 4

Worked Walton with a header, but looked all over the place without his usual partner Liam Cooper.

Can’t be faulted for lack of effort, but struggled to deal with Clarke and was glad to see the back of him.

CB: Gaetano Berardi – 3

Rare start with Cooper out injured, and didn’t grasp the opportunity with both hands.

Hard as nails in the tackle but was shaky positional and there was little understanding with Jansson.

LB: Ezgjan Alioski – 3

Caught out of position for Wigan’s first and was woeful with his delivery.

Went close with a couple of long-range efforts but this was well short of his usual performances.

CDM: Kalvin Phillips – 6

Sacrificed as Leeds looked for a breakthrough but the Whites lost a lot of control after his withdrawal.

RM: Pablo Hernandez – 5

Had an effort cleared off the line by Kipre but then hit the post from the penalty spot after the centre-back was dismissed.

Showed tidy feet to dance into the box on one occasion but was stopped by James before forcing more desperate defending with a shot from distance.

Tried his socks off but a frustrating afternoon for the Spaniard, who was denied by a great save from Walton.

CM: Tyler Roberts – 6

Had an excellent effort cleared off the line by Kal Naismith but was withdrawn at the break as Bielsa went on the attack.

CM: Mateusz Klich – 5

Went in the book for a cynical foul on Massey and looked a yard short in an uncharacteristically lethargic performance.

Brought off in the closing stages.

LM: Jack Harrison – 5

Got away with an underhit backpass and was lucky to stay on when Bielsa rang the changes at the break.

Like Alioski, his delivery was well below par and needed to offer more in attack, although he did improve as the game went on.

ST: Patrick Bamford – 7

Superbly taken goal put Leeds ahead, with the frontman showing a decent change of pace to hunt down his lose touch and fire past Walton.

Looked desperate to add to his tally but fluffed his lines when trying to get on the end of Klich’s cross.

SUB: Adam Forshaw (on for Phillips, 45 mins) – 4

Struggled to get his foot on the ball in central midfield and looked somewhat out of his depth.

SUB: Kemar Roofe (on for Roberts, 45 mins) – 5

Brought on at half-time to add some extra firepower and missed a great chance to put his side in the lead, chesting goalwards instead of heading.

SUB: Jack Clarke (on for Klich, 69 mins) – 6

Looked busy after his introduction and helped Leeds dominate in the closing stages.
