A lawyer representing the family of Kaylee Gain confirmed the St. Louis, Mo. teenager badly beaten in a widely seen March 8 street fight remains unconscious after suffering a serious head injury in the brawl.
“The only medical information that the family feels comfortable sharing at this time is to confirm that Kaylee has suffered a fractured skull that resulted in brain bleeding and swelling and that she still hasn’t regained consciousness in the week or so that has elapsed since this incident occurred,” attorney Bryan M. Kaemmerer said in a statement shared with the Daily News.
“The full scope and extent of Kaylee’s injuries and prognosis for recovery cannot be determined until, with God’s grace, she regains consciousness,” Kaemmerer added.
Video of Gain having her head repeatedly bashed against the concrete by a 15-year-old girl identified by some students as Maurnice DeClue went viral on social media shortly after the two clashed outside Hazelwood East High School on a Friday afternoon.
Police confirmed the arrest of a 15-year-old female suspect a day after the fight.
According to Kaemmerer, Gain’s family “would like justice to eventually be served through the legal system,” but is currently focused on her recovery.
Many who viewed the fight online are calling for prosecutors to punish the alleged assailant to the full extent of the law, while others are calling for compassion.
A GoFundMe set up last week on behalf of Gain’s family has since raised more than $360,000 to help cover healthcare costs.
