Lawns showing signs of 'winter stress' can be revived with simple 2-step method

With the drop in temperatures, reduced sunlight, and increased moisture loss, grass can quickly become brittle, discoloured, and vulnerable to issues.

Without proper care, these factors can leave your lawn looking rather dull, but with the right approach, it’s possible to maintain a strong and resilient lawn through the colder season.

To help homeowners protect their lawns, Tom Clamp, Head of Technical at Doff, a manufacturer of premium garden care products, shared his advice on how and when to revive a lawn showing signs of damage.

“Winter brings several challenges for lawns, from frost damage to nutrient depletion,” Tom explained.

“If left untreated, these issues can weaken the grass, making it harder for the lawn to bounce back when spring arrives.

“But with a few simple steps, you can help your lawn stay strong and healthy throughout the winter months.”

If your lawn is already showing signs of stress, such as thinning or patchy areas, it’s important to take the right course of action.

“If your grass is looking a bit worse for wear, the best time to start repairs is early autumn or spring, when soil temperatures rise above 7°c and the risk of frost is lower,” advises Tom.

One of the most effective ways to rejuvenate a struggling lawn is overseeding a process that involves spreading grass seed over areas that have become bare or sparse, which helps to improve the overall density of the turf.

Overseeding is especially important for creating a thicker, more resilient lawn that can better handle winter’s challenges.

In addition to overseeding, feeding your lawn with a high-quality fertiliser is another key step to improve the quality and overall look of your grass.

A well-balanced feed provides essential nutrients to the grass, helping it recover faster from damage and maintain its strength throughout the winter months.

Both overseeding and feeding are essential practices that can ensure your lawn not only survives the winter but thrives, emerging in the spring healthier and better prepared for the growing season ahead.
