That is according to Fox Sports’ NBA expert Chris Broussard.
The Celtics suffered a humiliating 112-123 loss against the LA Clippers on Saturday night as Irving was taken off due to injury in the second quarter.
Without the star in the second half, the Cetlics were outscored 83-44 as they gave up a 28-point lead.
Irving has been the subject of much speculation over his future, as he continues to be linked with a move away from Boston in the summer.
He has a player option on his contract for next year and many believe that he will opt out of that deal and move elsewhere.
The Los Angeles Lakers could be a potential destination after they failed to secure a trade for Anthony Davis, also taking into consideration the relationship Irving has with LeBron James.
But the New York Knicks created salary cap space for two max contracts this summer, and will look to pitch to the star if he becomes a free agent.
Speaking on Fox Sports’ Undisputed show, Broussard explained that the Celtics cannot afford to lose him.
“They can make the playoffs without him, they can actually make it quite deep,” he explained.
“But they can’t have a hope or a prayer of winning a championship.
“Now that the East has improved with Milwaukee getting so much better, Philadelphia are now stacked, Toronto getting better with Kawhi [Leonard], the Celtics can’t even reach the finals without Kyrie Irving.
“That’s why Danny Ainge, even with all the hints about Kyrie, he is still all in on keeping Kyrie and going after Anthony Davis.
“Why? Because he knows that Kyrie Irving is a superstar, and while we can be good, really good kinda, without Kyrie, we can’t be great without Kyrie.
“With Boston, it’s about being great and winning championships.
“Danny Ainge knows that every one of those championships, they’ve had a superstar player, and he knows that in the history of the NBA, only twice 2004 Detroit Pistons, 1979 Seattle Supersonics [Now Oklahoma City Thunder], they were the only two teams to win a championship without a superstar.
“So he knows that even though the atmosphere is a little shaky, the chemistry isn’t all there, guys are in their feelings, but Kyrie Irving has to stay for this team to win a championship.”
