Keep potatoes edible for months with clever storage hack – avoid cupboard with onions

When it comes to storing food Brits go to extreme lengths to ensure the products that we buy in supermarkets don’t go to waste.

As the UK goes through a cost of living crisis with costs skyrocketing people are buying less food when it comes to grocery shopping.

However, one food staple that remains a part of the grocery shop is potatoes. Not only are they a versatile food but also a filling ingredient.

Now, a Reddit user has asked the online forum how to store the item properly and ensure none of the items goes to waste.

In a thread, they wrote: “I am a single chick who lives alone. I live in a large apartment building.

“I don’t have anywhere that is 45-55-degree temperature as I see suggested for storing potatoes. I eat once a day. I also don’t have a car anymore, so I walk to either of the two grocery stores near me.

“I’m not sure if I could eat a 5lb bag of potatoes fast enough, they always seem to start growing eyes even if I keep them in the dark.

“This is why I stopped buying them, I ended up wasting so many. Is there anything I can do? Thanks.”

People took to the thread to share their suggestions with one writing: “Cool and dark. You can also just peel off the eyes, if it’s not green or soft it hasn’t gone bad.”

A second commented: “Keep them away from onions. They’ll make the potatoes sprout faster.”

Another backed up this claim and said: “Also – store your onions far away from them. Storing them together makes your potatoes go bad much faster.”

A fourth suggested: “You can freeze baked and mashed potatoes, or parboil thick sliced potatoes and then freeze them to make roasted or fried potatoes later.”

Meanwhile, one person suggested this technique can make potatoes last for up to a “month”. They said: “Put the whole bag in the fridge, I’ve gotten a month out of them before.”

Finally, one advised: “Peel and put in a container submerged in water and keep in the fridge. It’ll get the starch out too.”
