Winchester signed with the Eagles as an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma in 2013, but never saw any playing time.
It wasn’t until 2015 that the Chiefs signed Winchester and plugged him in as the team’s long snapper.
He isn’t the most important player on the field, but he shows up and does his job every single week.
That isn’t an exaggeration either, Winchester has played in every single Chiefs game since his signing in 2015.
The last 164 Chiefs regular season games have featured Winchester as the team’s long snapper.
Winchester has made a solid living for himself as a long snapper, consistently earning good contracts with the Chiefs.
His deal for 2025 is for one year and is worth $1.65 million.
Over the course of his career, Winchester has earned $9,756,756, and he’s won three Super Bowl rings with the Chiefs.
Kansas City fans were thrilled to see one of their longest-tenured players returning to the team and shared their thoughts on social media.
“Death, Taxes and Winchester with the Chiefs,” one fan said.
“Ride or die!” another fan said.
“James Winchester- long snapper specialist. Helps make @buttkicker7 and Matt Araiza a great special teams unit,” a third fan said.
“Glue guy. Gotta have ’em,” a fourth fan said.
“Never a bad snap,” a fifth fan said.
Re-signing Winchester is a rare move for the Chiefs this offseason, as they’ve seen many of their players head to new teams.
So far, important guys like Justin Reid, Tershawn Wharton, Justin Watson, and DeAndre Hopkins have all found new teams.
The Chiefs also have 14 more players in free agency that have yet to sign new deals.
Charles Omenihu is among the most important free agents that Kansas City has yet to resign.
