Vice President Kamala Harris was warned not to Google Doug Emhoff before they met for the first time in 2013.
Harris has been married to Emhoff since August 2014, around a year after they were first introduced to each other by a mutual friend.
Ahead of the first date, however, Harris recalls that she was told not to Google the famous lawyer. In her book, ‘The Truths We Hold’, Harris recalled that her friend instructed her: “His name is Doug Emhoff, but promise me you won’t Google him. Don’t overthink it. Just meet him.”
Harris added that she was told that Emhoff, who represented the likes of Walmart and Taco Bell during his time as a hotshot lawyer, already had her number and that he would reach out, something he did while attending a baseball game.
Describing the text as “awkward” Harris later said they texted before agreeing to a telephone conversation the day after. Today reported that the next day Emhoff left a long voicemail. Despite describing the message as “a little rambling” Harris admitted that it was something she kept.
She explained that while she was interested to learn about Emhoff, he felt he had completely ruined his chances of success with the future Vice President.
Harris wrote: “The voicemail, which I still have saved to this day, was long and a little rambling. He sounded like a nice guy, though, and I was intrigued to learn more.
“Doug, on the other hand, was pretty sure that he had ruined his chances. The way he tells it, he thought his voicemail had been disastrous and that he’d likely never hear from me again.”
Following the success of their first date, Harris and Emhoff would continue to see each other with the latter proposing to the former in 2014 while the pair were packing for a trip to Italy.
The same year the duo married in a ceremony presided over by Harris’ younger sister Maya with Emhoff’s children Cole and Ella choosing not to call Harris their stepmom and instead came up with the moniker “Momala”.
Speaking about Emhoff’s two children, who he had from a previous marriage, Harris wrote about how they had welcomed her into the family despite her caution about wanting to be respectful towards the pair.
Describing the pair, Harris wrote warmly: “They are brilliant, talented, funny kids who have grown to be remarkable adults. I was already hooked on Doug, but I believe it was Cole and Ella who reeled me in.”
