The bust of Justin Timberlake on DWI charges had the Hamptons buzzing Tuesday.
The pop superstar was pulled over after allegedly running a stop sign. He was charged with drunken driving in Sag Harbor, L.I., after police said he failed field sobriety tests. Records obtained by the News showed he refused to take a chemical test while in lockup.
Police reports said “his eyes were bloodshot and glassy,” and that “a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from his breath.” Other details of what led up to the incident remained unknown – and a source of chatter across the East End Tuesday.
Who was with him?
Timberlake told police he’d been following friends home, touching off speculation about who those friends might have been.
“I had one martini, and I followed my friends home,” he told cops, according to prosecutors.
One popular guess was longtime JT pal Jimmy Fallon, a close friend who has a house in Sagaponack, a straight shot down Sagg Road. Timberlake was pulled over at the intersection of Madison and Middle Line Highway; Madison turns into Sagg Road. The pair are well-known for their SNL tandem skits, including the holiday-themed Bring It on Down to Wrappinville.
Others noted that Jay Z and Beyonce arrived in town Sunday, as did billionaire Michael Rubin, both friends of Timberlake’s.
Sag Harbor police had yet to release dashcam video of the stop, which could reveal the identities of who was there. There’s no suggestion of any wrongdoing on the part of whomever Timberlake was following.
The stop happened six blocks away from The American Hotel, where TMZ reported Timberlake had been partying. Folks at the hotel didn’t have much to say Tuesday.
Media Frenzy
Sag Harbor’s Main Street in front of the Municipal Building and Courthouse Tuesday morning was chock-a block with news crews and reporters inside, awaiting the police reports.
“I was on my way to cover the Bernagozzi trial when I got this news,” one said.
As the reporters clustered in the small Court Clerk’s office, they spoke about how Timberlake was reportedly ushered out the back alleyway instead of along the more central Main Street, and then into a waiting car, accompanied by his lawyer Eddie Burke Jr.
Courthouse drama
The Court Clerk was frazzled — admitting that she was awakened at 7 a.m. and forgot her glasses, causing her to wear two pairs of reading glasses as she busily printed up police reports.
Outside on Main street, a couple of high school-aged boys made their way down the block yelling out, “Welcome to Sag Harbor, home of where Justin Timberlake drives drunk.”
At the court house, one police officer walked by and exclaimed, “Doesn’t anybody want MY autograph?”
Folks at nearby Goldberg’s Bagels were all talking about it as they ordered their iced coffees.
