Jets Mailbag: Assessing the Davante Adams trade, the Haason Reddick situation and possible Jamal Adams reunion

A lot has happened with the Jets during the last couple of weeks.

Following their loss to the Vikings in London, owner Woody Johnson fired coach Robert Saleh and made defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich the interim coach.

Ulbrich then made passing game coordinator Todd Downing the new play-caller after stripping offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett of those responsibilities.

And, oh yeah, the Jets just acquired Davante Adams in a trade with the Raiders this week.

Now, Gang Green will look to end its three-game losing streak this weekend against the 4-2 Steelers on Sunday Night Football. Before then, let’s answer a few questions in this week’s mailbag.

As someone who covers them, what is your honest assessment of the Adams trade? — @SirRantAndRave

I think Adams will help with the Jets’ red zone woes. In their loss to Buffalo on Monday night, Gang Green was 1-of-4 in red zone opportunities.

Although Adams is almost 32, he is still one of the league’s better receivers. He is an excellent route runner who can go up and grab the football at its highest point. Adams will also make Garrett Wilson better because the young receiver should now receive less attention from opposing teams.

The trade for Adams should improve the Jets’ offense overall. However, it’s a moot point if they can’t better protect Aaron Rodgers. He has been sacked 11 times and hit 30 times during the last three weeks.

It remains to be seen if Adams will be with the Jets after the 2024 season. A lot of that will depend on how the Jets finish during their final 11 games of the season.

If Gang Green misses the playoffs for a 14th consecutive year, it could look to rebuild, which is probably something the fans do not want to hear.

Make the prediction: Hassan Reddick plays for the Jets – yes or no? And if yes – when? — @Mikeybee88

I don’t think Reddick will play for the Jets at this point. The Jets have given Reddick’s new agent, Drew Rosenhaus, permission to seek a trade, which usually means that player is on the way out.

Reddick has only stepped into the Jets’ facility once for his introductory press conference, so I would not hold my breath on him playing for the team.

Gang Green has until the Nov. 5 trade deadline to move Reddick, so there’s still time to make it happen.

With JA [Jamal Adams] just being released, do you think Douglas would entertain the thought of a reunion? — @CFaceoff

On Thursday, the Titans released Adams after playing in three games for the team this season.

I know the Jets have some safety concerns, but I don’t see any world where Adams would return. I’m not sure he is a fit in Ulbrich’s defense, and Adams’ coverage skills are a liability, something the Jets certainly do not need.

Adams would benefit the Jets’ run defense because they’ve had trouble in that area for the last two years. However, he hasn’t been the same player since being selected to the Pro Bowl from 2018-20.

The Jets placed safety Chuck Clark (ankle) on injured reserve this week. But it seems likely Tony Adams and Ashtyn Davis will start at safety this weekend against the Steelers.

Any chance the Jets get D-line help? — @shaft226

The Jets certainly could use some help on their defensive line, considering their inconsistent pass rush and poor run defense.

While the Jets are tied for third in sacks in the league (20), they have registered just five during their three-game losing streak. Jermaine Johnson’s Achilles tear hurt the Jets’ defensive line in various ways. Not only did it hurt the Jets’ depth, but it also brought more attention to defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, who has 14 tackles and two sacks this season.

The Jets’ rushing defense allows 124.2 yards per game, which is 17th in the league. If the Jets are to add another defensive lineman, I imagine it would be a signing, not a trade.

The Jets’ 2025 second and third-round pick is tied to Adams after the trade. Also, the Jets may not want to mortgage more of their future on a team 2-4 and currently two games under .500.
