Jennifer Saunders' quiet life in hidden gem market town where homes fetch £494,000

Jennifer Saunders is best known for her roles in the sketch show French and Saunders, the sitcom Absolutely Fabulous and for playing the Fairy Godmother in Shrek 2.

Over the years, the 66-year-old has appeared in several well-known TV shows and films including Friends, Let Them Eat Cake, Minions and Sing.

Away from the screen, Jennifer lives a quiet life in Devon with her husband of almost 40 years, fellow comedian Adrian Edmondson.

The couple, who married in 1985, swapped their busy life in London for a secluded farmhouse on the edge of Dartmoor.

According to MailOnline, the couple sold their London home for £2.2million back in 2002 and made the move to the pretty market town of Chagford.

The couple reportedly bought a £1million farmhouse set on five acres of land with a swimming pool. The property was originally meant to be a holiday home for the couple and their three daughters, Ella, Beattie and Freya, but they later decided to move there permanently.

She previously told the Evening Standard: “We’ve lived there for many years and I love being surrounded by beautiful countryside and the sense of community that exists in a village.”

Chagford in Devon is a beautiful market town located on the northeast edge of Dartmoor close to the River Teign.

The pretty town reportedly has a microclimate which means it actually experiences more sunshine and less rain compared to other parts of Dartmoor.

The town’s buildings are architecturally stunning with the idyllic church of St Michael and Castle Drogo, a country house overlooking the town in Drewsteignton, being particularly impressive.

The town is home to a plethora of independent shops, cafes, art galleries and fantastic eateries as well as boutique hotels and quaint local pubs.

It’s also the perfect town for those who enjoy the outdoors with several miles of moors to explore right on one’s doorstep.

The Times named the town one of the “best places to live in the UK” in 2021, describing the village as “arty, environmentally minded and hospitable”.

Homes in Chagford don’t come cheap with homes having an overall average price of £494,203 over the last year, according to Rightmove.

The majority of sales in Chagford during the last year were detached properties, selling for an average price of £805,000. Terraced properties sold for an average of £295,450, with flats fetching £270,000.

Overall, sold prices in Chagford over the last year were 29 percent down on the previous year and similar to the 2014 peak of £492,074.
