Jennifer Garner’s super cameo in “Deadpool & Wolverine” featured an apparent nod to her divorce from Ben Affleck, amid the latter’s reported marital tensions with current wife Jennifer Lopez.
This story contains spoilers about the film, “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
The new Marvel film, which hit theaters this week, sees the “13 Going on 30” star, 52, reprise her role as the warrior Elektra — which she last played in the titular 2005 film, after having originated the role in 2003’s “Daredevil,” starring her ex-husband as the title superhero.
When Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) expresses sympathy to Elektra over the loss of Daredevil — one of three late heroes she points to as victims of Cassandra (Emma Corrin) and co., Elektra ambivalently shrugs: “It’s fine.”
Given that Garner and the “Gone Girl” star, 51, were together both on- and off-screen, many have regarded the moment as a reference to the end of their real-life love story.
Garner and Affleck — who share three kids: Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12 — wed in 2005 and divorced in 2018.
The “Deadpool” moment comes amid months of reported marital tensions between Affleck and 54-year-old Lopez.
Despite reportedly living apart, and celebrating their second wedding anniversary on opposite coasts, neither Affleck nor Lopez has remarked on the state of their marriage. Both were also photographed sporting their wedding bands in recent days, though Lopez also reportedly celebrated her 55th birthday earlier this week apart from her husband.
An insider told People earlier this month that, despite reports their differing approaches to celebrity have contributed to the rift, their marital issues in actuality run “deeper” than fame.
