An ex-Scotland Yard and Met police officer has issued an urgent warning about the Airbnb Jay Slater stayed in before his disappearance as the search for the missing teenager enters its third week.
Jay went missing near Masca in the northwest of Tenerife on June 17 after attending a rave in Playa de las Americas in the south of the island the night before. He met two men at the music event and stayed the night at their Airbnb.
In the morning, he needed to make his way back to Los Cristianos in the south, where he was staying with pal Lucy Law but missed a bus home.
Likely not realising it was an 11-hour walk to his accommodation, Jay attempted to make the trek through mountainous terrain – which is when he is believed to have gone missing.
That was two weeks ago today, and now, experienced police officer Graham Wettone is calling on Spanish police to look into the Airbnb the men stayed at, as it could be a point of interest.
Despite Spanish police speaking to the two men and calling them “irrelevant” to the case, Wettone thinks it could be worth resisting the issue.
He told MailOnline: “I’ve been following this case closely and discussing it with colleagues and it’s certainly a very bizarre one, lots of things just don’t add up.”
“I’m sure the Spanish police kept their details and if need be can go back to them and investigate them with the help of British police.
“I know people are saying these two should have been kept but unless there is any real incriminating evidence it would be hard to keep them in Spain.
“I would hope that they have at least secured the Airbnb because if evidence is there then it will need to be gathered.”
The last person to hear from Jay was his friend Lucy after he called her while making the journey from the Airbnb to Los Cristianos. He told her he desperately needed water and his phone was about to die.
The call then cut out and nobody has heard from him since, but search and rescue teams have been scouring the area where his phone last “pinged”.
