A possible new image of Jay Slater has emerged from his Snapchat account – and one detective has revealed why he is “confident” it the teen in the image.
The former British police detective Mark Williams-Thomas, who has worked on a number of high-profile missing persons cases, has been working with Jay’s family.
Jay Slater, from Lancashire, went missing on Monday, June 17, after attending a two day festival and going back to an apartment with new friends he met at the event.
During his final call to his friend Lucy at 8am local time on the day of his disappearance, the 19-year-old said his phone had only one percent battery, he was thirsty and he did not know where he was – the walk back to the apartment would have been around 11 hours.
A new photo has emerged seemingly posted to Slater’s Snapchat account of a hand holding a cigarette at 7.30pm, just an hour before phoning his friend Lucy.
Mark, who flew out to Tenerife to help with the search, said he is “confident” that the photo is of Jay wearing his “black and green AirMax trainers, which he had on the night he went out”.
The detective also revealed that the teen told friends he had taken a £12,000 Rolex from a person.
He said: “On route Jay posted a Snapchat saying that they had taken a £12,000 Rolex from a person. We have been unable to validate this in terms of a reported theft.
“However, friends of Jay he would not make this up and the watch was the subject of a later conversation between them.
Jay’s mum Debbie Duncan released a new statement and picture of her son two days after the authorities made the difficult decision call off the search on Saturday.
She said: “My son, Jay Dean Slater, came to the holiday island of Tenerife on the 13th of June with his friend to attend a music festival.
“We don’t know anything about the investigation. We’re leaving it to the police.
“Let’s keep it going, keep it alive. Let them (the police) get on with it, we’ve got to trust in these people.”
