When most of us think of a cruise ship, we dream of sailing around the world with stunning sea views, top deck pools, endless restaurants, bars and cabin rooms – but running such grand boats isn’t an easy feat.
A video has recently gone viral after revealing what it is really like on a cruise ship during a storm. When a storm has the potential to threaten a cruise ship, the captain and crew will work to keep the ship and people on board safe. While cruise ships can typically “outrun” most storms, passengers may still experience rough seas, says Cruise Critic.
TikTok user Days Out Worldwide, who often shares cruise ship and holiday advice, recently shared what a ship’s swimming pool looks like during a storm. Although covered by a net, the power of the strong winds means that the pool overflow onto the deck is “crazy”. It means that taking a dip in the pool is off limits.
The user said: “Did you know that when the seas are rough on a cruise, you cannot go in the swimming pool. Look how rough it gets, the end bit is crazy.”
Thousands of people rushed to comment as one said: “All I see if a fun wave pool.” Another added: “One cruise let us swim and it was so much fun.” While someone wrote: “I was on a cruise as a kid and the waves from the pool reached the second floor.”
A number of people pointed out the net was not helping much. “The net is not netting,” said one. Another added: “What’s the point of the net? The water is going to go through.”
But a viewer pointed out: “I’m assuming that net is supposed to stop you drowning in the pool except it’s more an entanglement risk.”
Days Out Worldwide previously said at night on a cruise, the sky “gets so dark” that you can’t see.
They also explained: “Did you know that when the seas are rough on a cruise during the day or night, and the ship feels like its rocking up, down and side to side, the ship is actually still travelling on water.”
A spokesperson for Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said: “For Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) and its Cruise Line Members, the safety of guests and crew is the highest priority and is fundamental to their operations. Even with an increase in cruise capacity, cruise lines have maintained an exceptional safety record – making cruising one of the safest ways to travel. In fact, cruise travel is safer than virtually every other form of travel.”
