British chef Jamie Oliver made a delicious bread-and-butter pudding recipe with a cheesy twist.
Jamie said: “Savoury bread and butter pudding meets a ploughman’s in this tasty number that heroes Tesco Finest Nine Mini Hot Cross Buns.
“Stuffed with oozy Cheddar cheese and tangy sandwich pickle, then baked until puffed up and golden, this is a great get-ahead option.
“Simply assemble the night before and stash in the fridge, they’ll be ready to bake when needed.”
Here’s how to make Jamie’s ploughman’s hot cross buns recipe, which is ready in 50 minutes.
Jamie’s cheesy hot cross buns recipe
Serves: four people
Ingredients:
One x nine-pack Tesco Finest Mini Hot Cross Buns
Three tbsp sandwich pickle
75g mature Cheddar cheese
Four large eggs
200ml semi-skimmed milk
Two sticks of celery
One apple
Two Little Gem lettuce (250g)
Extra-virgin olive oil
Red wine vinegar
Method
Preheat the oven to gas 4, 180°C, fan 160°C. Keeping them as one, cut through the hot cross buns horizontally, then lay the bases in a snug-fitting baking dish. Spread with the pickle and grate over the cheese.
Beat the eggs with the milk, season with black pepper, then pour half of the mixture into the dish.
Top with the lids and pour over the remaining egg mixture. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden and bubbling.
On a large board, trim the celery, core the apple and cut it into quarters, then finely slice it all.
Separate the lettuce leaves. Add all the fruit and veg to a bowl, then drizzle over a little extra-virgin olive oil and red wine vinegar.
Season with salt and pepper, then toss well. Serve alongside the cheese and pickle buns.
Elsewhere, a survey of 2,000 UK adults, carried out between February 23 to 27, 2024, Opinium Research discovered the nation’s attitude towards hot cross buns.
While more than three-quarters of people older than 55 loved a traditional hot cross bun, youngsters between 18 to 24 favoured innovative buns, from chocolate to apple and cinnamon.
Additional flavours favoured by “Gen-Z” included salted caramel and chocolate orange.
Meanwhile, nearly 90 percent of people aged 75 and over thought you couldn’t beat a classic hot cross bun – although Jamie Oliver’s twist could be an exception.
