Jamie Carragher stunned Thierry Henry and Micah Richards into silence with an awkward joke about Kate Abdo’s boyfriend while covering Arsenal’s win over Porto in the Champions League. The former Liverpool defender was on punditry duties for CBS Sports and bizarrely wore an Arsenal shirt on the sidelines at the Emirates Stadium.
The joke appeared to stun Henry and Richards into silence, with the pair smiling awkwardly while Carragher was the only one laughing. A visibly annoyed Abdo failed to see the funny side, replying: “What? Why would you even say that?” before Carragher attempted to explain himself by noting that Scott ‘hasn’t had a mention on the show tonight’.
Abdo made her relationship with Scott, who trains former world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, official earlier this month. The name of her partner was previously revealed live on air by Carragher and Richards, who had been making jokes about Abdo’s new relationship since the start of the season. The pair once interrogated Abdo over whether they would be invited to her future wedding.
The presenter is believed to have started dating Scott following her separation from husband Ratmin Abdo, who she married in 2010. Scott, a former boxer himself with a record of 38 professional wins and three losses, has trained Wilder since 2021.
Abdo publicly declared her support for Scott before Wilder was beaten by Joseph Parker in Saudi Arabia three months ago, saying in a post on Instagram: “The man I love to see win is about to get another W on the biggest night in boxing.”
