A MAN and his uncle went on a treasure hunt of sorts after purchasing a storage unit for $12,964 and scouring through its contents.
Once what was inside was revealed, the unit – filled to the brim with boxes – left others divided on whether or not it was worth the hefty price tag.

The nearly $13,000 purchase was highlighted in a social media post on Monday by an X page (@financedystop) dedicated to sharing money mishaps.
“Guy paid $12,964 for this storage unit,” reads the caption. “This seems like an interesting occupation. It’s like a treasure hunt.”
In the highlighted video, originally shared on YouTube (@Hustle-Grind-Rewind) the cameraman explained that he and his uncle purchased a 6 x 10 storage unit at auction late last winter.
The public storage unit, located in Pacheco, California – roughly 30 miles from San Francisco – was stacked full of boxes.
“We’re about to find out what the hell I just did,” said the cameraman.
His uncle first pulled a small box off the top of one of the stacks, revealing that it was a vintage Jumpin bookshelf game.
The cameraman estimated that the game was worth roughly $30 to $50, adding a screenshot of one that sold for $39.95.
As the pair continued to dig through the boxes, they found even more bookcase games as well as a box filled with PS3 games still in their original wrapping, which the cameraman called “a good sign.”
“This box makes everything look better, doesn’t it?” the cameraman said as he sifted through the next box.
He pointed out two packs of sealed Incredibles 2 action figures, a Star Trek figure, and World of Warcraft figurines, among other collectibles.
“Wow. They were a collector,” said the cameraman as he thumbed through another package. “This might turn out to be good.”
They proceeded to dig through other boxes, stumbling upon one filled with comic books such as Fantastic Four and another stacked with more sealed PS3 games such as DuckTales: Remastered, Persona 4 Arena, and Battlefield 3.
Another box held several games and toys, including a Magic the Gathering Deck Builder’s Toolkit, decks of cards, and Hot Wheels cars.

FANS REACT
X users had mixed reactions to the buyers’ finds inside the storage unit.
A handful of fans were impressed with the contents of the unit and even wanted to get in on the action.
“Holy sh**… how do I find a jackpot like this?” asked one user.
“Some of those games and movies can garner a lot of money,” said another. “Ten years ago, I saw an adventure game sell for $80,000+.”
Storage Unit Auctions
Buying abandoned storage units can be a gamble, but it’s also an opportunity for treasure hunters.
During these auctions, buyers often have no idea what is inside until they make the purchase.
Some have found rare collectibles, jewelry, or even forgotten stacks of cash worth thousands.
Here are some tips for storage unit auctions:
- Set a Budget – It’s easy to get carried away, but stick to what you can afford
- Do Your Research – Attend a few auctions beforehand to understand how they work
- Look for Clues – Peek through the opening of the unit for hints about its contents
- Be Prepared for Junk – Not every unit holds valuable items. Some may be filled with old furniture and broken appliances
However, many other viewers were critical of the nearly $13,000 purchase, arguing that the unit’s contents likely were not worth the price tag.
“I’m not convinced that dude can make his money back on this. Cool stuff but 12K worth, uh no,” commented one.
“I still didn’t see 12 grand worth of stuff. The thing is, you have to find someone who is willing to buy this sh** off of you when it’s all said and done,” said another.
“Dude will spend 20k of his time just going thru that junk,” wrote a third.
Another user joked that if the pair brought all the items to GameStop, the store would only offer them $3.50 for everything.
Storage units aren’t the only place with hidden valuables.
For example, one woman found a rare painting for $2.90 in a thrift store – a “little plaque” at the bottom made it worth up to $34,800.
Meanwhile, another woman inherited her grandfather’s luxury pocket watch and an expert said what’s “on the reverse” made it worth $30,000.
