Israeli state rejected by 90 percent of Arabs in poll as Middle East tensions explode

Nearly 90 percent of Arabs do not recognise the state of Israel with just four percent saying they do recognise the Jewish state, a poll found.

Tensions in the Middle East have erupted in the last six months after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 civilians.

Since then, Israel has launched a military campaign in Gaza that has killed over 33,000 people, sparking concern among world leaders.

Israel and Palestine’s decades of hostility has become increasingly evident in various polling.

Arab Center Washington DC, in cooperation with The Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies, published polling in January to gauge the Arab public’s views about the Israeli war on Gaza.

This polled people in 16 countries: Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tunisia, the West Bank in Palestine, and Yemen.

One question asked to those surveyed was regarding the recognition of Israel.

The poll found that 89 percent of Arabs reject the premise of an Israeli state while four percent do support it. Seven percent responded ‘don’t know.’

On the question of whether peace can be achieved, 68 percent said there is no chance of peace with Israel.

The majority, 59 percent, said they came to this realization recently while nine percent said they felt this way even before the war.

Polling in Israel also shows the intense division between Israelis and Palestinians.

A survey conducted by the Israel Democracy Institute (IDI) shows that 63 percent of the Jewish public does not support Israel agreeing to the formation of a Palestinian state.

Meanwhile, a poll conducted by the daily newspaper Israel Hayom found that the public is almost equally split about what the most important goal of the war is.

According to 46.6 percent of respondents, securing the release of hostages is the most important goal. But 44.8 percent said “victory in the war against Hamas” is more important.

Meanwhile, Joe Biden has called for an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza, telling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that US military support will depend on whether civilians and aid workers are protected in the future.

The White House said in a statement that the US president “made clear the need for Israel to announce and implement a series of specific, concrete and measurable steps to address civilian harm, humanitarian suffering and the safety of aid workers.”

The statement added: “He made clear that US policy with respect to Gaza will be determined by our assessment of Israel’s immediate action on these steps.”
