An inmate in Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center died in a fight Wednesday afternoon — the second violent death at the troubled federal jail in as many months.
Edwin Cordero, 36, died after several inmates at the Sunset Park jail started brawling around 2:50 p.m., the federal Bureau of Prisons stated.
Staff at the jail performed “life-saving measures” and requested EMS medics, who took Cordero to an area hospital, where he died, the BOP said in a press release Wednesday.
Cordero was awaiting transfer to another federal prison to serve out a 24-month sentence for violating the terms of his supervised release, sources familiar with the case told the Daily News.
He was initially sentenced in 2021 to 18 months in prison, and three years supervised release, in a federal wire fraud case. He was still on supervised release on Feb. 19, living in the Bronx, when he slashed a 17-year-old autistic teen in the face after a small boy accompanying the teen threw a snowball at him, according to federal prosecutors.
The attack led to an indictment in state court; Cordero was locked up at MDC for a supervised release violation. On June 25, Cordero was sentenced to 24 months for the violation, and appealed the sentence two days later, records show.
His death comes after another inmate, Uriel Whyte, was stabbed to death in a fight at the jail June 7.
