I’m a gardening pro – this is the exact time you should water your plants in April if you want them luscious for summer

SUNNIER weather is back and next month is the perfect time to turn your attention to your flowers, according to an expert.

Sean Lade, founder of Easy Garden Irrigation, revealed the exact time of day to water your plants so that they thrive in time for summer.

He advised: “Spring is a critical time for watering as temperatures rise and plants come out of dormancy.

“The best time to water is early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation and give plants enough time to absorb moisture.”

The gardening expert revealed how to achieve the perfect green lawn in your garden.

He advised: “Lawns should be watered deeply but less frequently to encourage deep root growth – around 1 inch per week is ideal, depending on rainfall.

Signs of overwatering include “yellowing leaves, wilting despite wet soil and mould growth”, whereas underwatering leads to “dry, crispy leaves, slow growth, and soil pulling away from the edges of pots or beds”.

Sean recommends checking the soil moisture by “pushing a finger into the soil or using a moisture meter can help maintain the right balance”.

Sean collaborated with Protectivity – providers of insurance for small businesses – and shared the gardening tasks to action in April.

He revealed that “April is a fantastic time to start sowing hardy annuals like poppies, marigolds, and cornflowers for vibrant summer displays.”

The gardening whizz said: “In the vegetable patch, sow carrots, beetroot, spinach, and lettuce directly outdoors, while tender crops like tomatoes and chillies should remain under cover until the risk of frost has passed.”

Before planting, Sean advises preparing your soil by mulching with compost or well-rotted manure, which “locks in moisture and improves plant health”.

He added that feeding hungry plants like roses and fruit bushes with a balanced fertiliser will “give them the nutrients they need to thrive”.

According to one gardening expert, there’s a common mistake you could be making that’s ruining your garden – and it’s easily avoidable.

Elise Harlock, brand manager at Prestige Flowers, revealed that overwatering is one of the biggest mistakes she sees time and time again.

It’s easy to think your garden needs more water than it actually does, especially during the spring and summer months.

But the truth is overwatering is just as bad as forgetting to water your blooms altogether.

“Overwatering suffocates the roots, leading to rot, disease and weak plants that struggle to survive,” the pro told Express.co.uk.

Spring is the ideal time to tidy up overgrown hedges and shrubs, as regular trimming ensures healthy growth and reduces pest issues. Using a tool like the Gtech Lightweight Hedge Trimmer can help to keep your greenery looking sharp and neat.

4. Composting

Starting a compost heap this spring is a pro-active, cost-effective way to harness nutritious soil for your plants and recycle organic waste that will benefit the overall health of your greenery and foliage.

5. Look after your lawn

Lawn care is hugely important in assuring your garden stays looking beautiful. Make sure to rake away any excess leaves and trim your grass routinely.
