'I'm a gardening expert – you must do this one job right now to stop plants from dying'

As temperatures rise, it’s essential for Britons to ensure their plants, both indoors and outdoors, continue to thrive.

While outdoor gardening often takes precedence during the warmer months, it’s equally important not to neglect houseplants.

Samantha Richards, a garden expert at Gazeboshop, shared her top tips for caring for houseplants during the summer.

“The most important job to do right now is ‘water and wipe’ houseplants,” Richards advised.

She said that even if houseplants do not receive direct sunlight, the warmer weather and longer days can still cause the soil to dry out more quickly.

“Check the soil of your house plants a couple of times a week and top up with water if needed,” she said.

Richards noted that different houseplants have varying needs, so it is crucial to tend to them individually.

Generally, most houseplants require more water in the summer than in the autumn and winter due to faster soil evaporation.

In addition to watering, regular dusting is essential for houseplants.

“Some houseplants are more prone to collecting dust, so give them a regular wipe down to keep them looking their best,” Richards explained.

Dusting does more than just improve the appearance of the plants, it also promotes better health.

Removing dirt and dust enhances photosynthetic activity, which ultimately encourages more growth.

She added: “Some houseplants are also more prone to collecting dust so give them a regular wipe down to keep them looking their best.”
