When washed incorrectly, laundry garments including socks can lose their crisp colour and turn grey, even when they are clean.
This can be corrected by using bleach but I often prefer to try natural cleaning methods, especially when it comes to laundry.
To keep them looking pristine, I decided to use soda crystals, which can be used around the home for a multitude of chores.
Soda crystals are safe to use on all types of fabric and can be beneficial to add to your wash too, to help soften the water.
However, I decided on a presoak which involved submerging the socks into warm water with a couple of scoops of the crystals.
I simply got a large enough bowl, filled it with boiling water and topped it up with cold before adding some crystals.
It’s important to mix the water and the crystals together, and the water will begin to look cloudy.
I use Elbow Grease’s soda crystals which I picked up from Wilko for around £1.49, but there are other brands on the market.
The socks were left for around 30 minutes before returning and ringing them out in the bowl.
I then placed the socks into the washing machine for a cycle along with some other white garments.
Once complete, I removed the socks and left them on the airer to dry. To my surprise, the stains had completely lifted.
The socks were completely white again and looked bright and crisp, almost brand new.
If you don’t fancy presoaking socks in hot water, a tablespoon of soda crystals can be added to your detergent or straight into the washing machine.
Soda crystals can also be used for blocked pipes, a smelly washing machine, removing grease and dirt as well as algae from patios.
