The warmer weather hitting the UK is welcomed by most.
But, warm days and humid nights are the perfect conditions for slugs to emerge and wreak havoc on your prize vegetables and plants.
Carol Ibbertson took to social media to share the simple solution that keeps slugs away from gobbling your plants.
She shared her tip to the Facebook group, Gardening on a budget official, which boasts over 450,000 members.
Sharing a picture of the buy and her well-kept plant, she said: “The never ending Hosta vs Slugs (Quest).
“Having tried all other options & suggestions and failed, this stuff is working for me.
“Strong garlic smell plus the oily content stops the blighters getting up my pots.
“Been spraying the plants & around pot edges every other day for a week or so.”
Carol swore by the Frylight 1 Cal Garlic Oil Cooking Spray to keep her plants protected from the pests.
While most save the oil for the frying pan she said it helped keep slugs away and it cost just £1.74 from Asda.
The strong scent of garlic repels slugs while the oily consistency makes it hard for them to climb up plants.
The post quickly went viral on the Facebook group and many thanked her for the tip and were eager to try it for themselves.
One person wrote: “That is a genius idea! I’m going to try it, I don’t suppose it would harm plants to spray it on the stems/leaves.”
Another commented: “My worry would be the leaves being fried in the sun with oil on them.”
Keep pests out all summer
Hornets and wasps – hate the smell of peppermint oil so spraying this liberally around your patio or balcony can help to keep them at bay.
Moths – acidic household white vinegar is effective for deterring moths. Soak some kitchen roll in vinegar and leave it in your wardrobe as a deterrent.
Flying ants – herbs and spices, such as cinnamon, mint, chilli pepper, black pepper, cayenne pepper, cloves, or garlic act as deterrents.
Mosquitoes – plants, herbs and essential oil fragrances can help deter mossies inside and out. Try eucalyptus, lavender and lemongrass.
“So far so good, Been spraying plants & pot edges for the last week or so during this glorious weather,” replied Carol.
“Going to try it …great idea,” penned a third.
Meanwhile a fourth said: “Great tip.”
“Brilliant,” claimed a fifth.
Someone else added: “Great idea.”
