Dollar General is known and loved for its penny sales, which sees items reduced to exactly that: a penny.
The list is an open secret amongst Dollar General employees, too.
One site that shares the updated penny list, The Freebie Guy, shared the warning on his site.
He stressed: “DO NOT ASK EMPLOYEES ABOUT THE PENNY ITEMS.

“THESE ITEMS ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE ON THE SHELVES!
“EMPLOYEES WILL NOT HELP YOU FIND THEM!”
The list of items this applies to changes each week, and one shopper definitely made the most of it.
She shared her shopping haul on social media to a sea of shocked and sceptical reactions.
The caption of the Facebook post she shared said: “My freezer hall!
“One store .98 cents total! Beyond blessed over $400 worth of groceries!
“Went back & found 14 more Pennie’s.”
The pictures along with caption shows the kitchen piled high with pizza boxes, fried chicken and other freezer goodies.
In a comment reply, she confirmed that she lived in Louisiana.
An exact location is not known, however.
THAT’S GOTTA BE FAKE!
The comment section was launched into debate as to the authenticity of the 98 cent claim.
In one of the blunter comments, one person simply said: “This is fake.”
But that claim was quickly refuted with a direct reply, which while defending penny sales, didn’t shine them in the best light.
The reply noted: “…It’s real but it’s all junk food though.
“Nothing most people would actually buy or eat which is why it sat in the freezer and Pennied out.
How to cut the cost of your grocery shop
BELOW are some tips on how to reduce the amount you spend on groceries.
- Write yourself a list – Only buy items that you need. If it isn’t on your list, don’t put it in the trolley
- Create a budget – Work out a weekly budget for your food shopping
- Never shop hungry – You are far more likely to buy more food if your tummy is rumbling
- Don’t buy pre-chopped veggies or fruit – The extra they’ll charge for chopping can be eye watering
- Use social media – Follow your favourite retailers to find out about the latest deals
- Be disloyal – You may want to go to different stores to find the best bargains
- Check the small print – It’s always worth checking the price per kg/lb/litre when comparing offers so you’re making a like for like decision as a bigger box won’t necessarily mean you get more
- Use your loyalty cards – Don’t be afraid to sign up to them all. They all work slightly differently – work out what bonus suits you better and remember to trade in your points for additional rewards
“Most penny items are things no one wants.”
And others were more congratulatory.
One comment read: “Wow Factor.”
And another added: “I wish they had pennies on different foods.
“But this will send someone to bed full.”
Those looking to profit on the penny sales will have to pay attention to the changing list every week.
