A huge explosion and a subsequent fire hit the Kuibyshev oil refinery in Russia’s Samara Oblast on Friday.
According to sources from Telegram channels Astra, Baza, and Mash, local residents were the first to report a massive explosion at the Kuibyshev oil refinery, situated near the city of Novokuybyshevsk in Samara Oblast.
The explosion swiftly led to a raging fire within the refinery’s premises.
Initial reports suggest that the refinery fell victim to a drone attack, as confirmed by regional authorities.
The fire primarily engulfed the refinery’s crucial oil distillation tower, with authorities attributing the cause directly to the drone strike.
The Kuibyshev oil refinery is a key facility specialising in the production of motor fuels, including petrol and diesel fuel compliant with Euro-5 emission standards. Additionally, it churns out numerous other petroleum products crucial in meeting market demands.
The Financial Times recently disclosed alleged efforts by the United States to dissuade Ukraine from targeting Russian oil refineries and other energy infrastructure.
The concern stemmed from fears of heightened energy prices and further escalation in the already tense situation.
However, Olha Stefanishyna, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, claimed that from a military perspective, Russian oil refineries are legitimate targets. She emphasised that Ukraine’s actions align with NATO standards in this regard.
Contrary to reports, Mykhailo Podoliak, adviser to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, refuted claims that Washington demanded Ukraine cease its attacks on Russian oil infrastructure.
