How to tell if plants need watering – easy hack only takes a few seconds

As the UK basks in hot weather, many garden enthusiasts are busy water their plants.

However, many are often unsure if their plants are actually parched or perfectly fine.

The dangers of waterlogged soil, which can suffocate plants and kill them, is a real concern for green-thumbed Brits. Signs your plant may be overwatered? Look out for sluggish growth and a sickly yellow hue.

But how does one dodge this gardening faux pas? One woman claims her father shared the ‘best’ method on how to prevent overwatering, guaranteeing to save time, effort, and your precious plants.

Samantha Rose Holdren took to TikTok on her @samantharoseholdren account where she has a whopping following of 107,000 to reveal her secret.

In the viral video, Samantha can be seen spritzing her leafy friends as she begins: “My dad taught me one of the best garden hacks. This is going to save you a lot of time and a lot of plant’s lives.”

She then reveals: “The best way to tell if your plant needs water…? Just kick the pot. If it doesn’t move, it doesn’t need water. If it moves it needs water.”

She signed off with an enthusiastic “You’re welcome!”. Samantha’s video has impressed a lot of people, amassing over 99,000 likes and a plethora of comments.

Online viewers have lauded the trick, with one fan declaring: “Great tip!” Another commended: “Love it, thanks.”

A third follower added: “Young lady your dad is a genius! Thanks for sharing!”

While a fourth enthusiast shared their own experience, saying: Not going to lie as a professional horticulturist, I walk around the greenhouses doing this all day and tipping hanging baskets!”

Yet, some were sceptical, with one person querying: “What if it’s just a heavier pot?” While someome else asked about plants in the ground. Another added: “But… if there are rocks at the bottom, it will be heavy by nature.”

In response to the final question Samantha replied: “True that. You will still be able to tell the difference between water and no water if the rocks don’t weigh it down too much.”

The advice also sparked a light-hearted reaction from some, with one user joking: “So I just bully my plants to see if they’re thirsty?” Another humorously suggested: “Gonna kick my one gallon pots like I’m in the NFL to see if they need water.”
