How to deep clean an oven for the first time with ‘amazing’ product – ‘just spray on’

Wanting to know exactly how to get their oven super clean, having never deep cleaned it before, an individual took to Reddit to ask people how to go about it.

They wrote: “In the last 4 years, I’ve only tried to clean the oven once. And I hated it, it’s so awkward to clean (maybe it’s also because I don’t know the most efficient way to clean it).

“So Reddit, help me out! I’m determined to deep clean my house and this is one of those tasks that’s super daunting and I don’t even know how to really tackle it.

“I tried searching Reddit but then only saw before and afters and so many different methods.

“I have a GE freestanding gas range that does have a self clean/steam clean option – but I’ll admit I’m really intimidated by it.

“I keep imagining that with my luck I’ll have a smoke out and set off the fire alarm or melt my house away or something.

“Growing up my mother always told me NOT to use it because of those reasons so I’ve never used the oven self-cleaning option before. The fact that it’s a gas range/oven makes me even more intimidated at trying to clean it too.

“I also have 2 dogs and a 9-month-old baby in the house if it factors into anything.”

Helpful people left some tips in the comments section of the post.

One person wrote: “Oven cleaner sprays do a fantastic job and are pretty cheap, Easy Off seems to be the most popular brand.

“If you’re in Canada, I’d recommend the noname brand. Depending on how thick the burnts are, you might want to leave it for an hour or so.

“Some brands recommend using it overnight but, honestly, I can’t imagine the state of an oven for it to be sitting for that long.”

Another person added in: “I just did mine last week! I had a ton of baked on spills in the bottom for which I used a 4:1 baking soda water paste and left on for 30 min. This was sooo satisfying and cleaned up almost everything on the base.

“For the door and sides I used bar keepers friend spray cleanser with what I believe was a steel wool scrubby. Wear gloves for this, unless if you’re cool with your nails being a wreck for a week like mine were ha!”

And a third person chimed in: “Easy Off Heavy Duty is amazing! Just spray on, leave for a few minutes (longer if necessary) and wipe off.

“Don’t bother with that crazy vinegar sprayed on baking soda paste concoctions, you get stuck with residual baking soda powder forever afterwards no matter how much you wipe and honestly it doesn’t even remove much.

“…it is possible to clean behind the oven door glass. Oven doors generally are easy to take apart. You’ll see a few screws on the side of the door. Check your oven manual (or look it up online for your model) and take careful note of what pieces go where for reassembly. Take pictures or a video if you decide to take the door apart.”
