Millions of people around the world watched Prince Charles marry Lady Diana Spencer in 1981 in a fairytale ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral. Their relationship though, was short-lived and the two went through a tumultuous marriage which dramatically deteriorated until the couple separated in 1992. In 1995, Diana gave an explosive interview with BBC Panorama, in which she talked about her husband’s infidelity.
Referring to Camilla Parker Bowles, she famously said: “Well, there were three of us in the marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”
Diana ended up having extramarital affairs as well.
Their marriage completely crumbled and in 1996 they finally divorced, one year before the Princess’ tragic death.
Former royal butler Paul Burrell told Italian TV show Ricominciare in 2008 of the moment he knew Diana’s relationship with Charles had passed the point of no return.
He claimed the Prince of Wales brutally told Diana he had never loved her, and just married her to have children.
The Princess, Mr Burrell said, was devastated and “cried an ocean of tears”.
He said: “She was trapped in a world that would not listen to her.
“Her children were the most important people in her life and instead of being loved she reversed it by giving love.
‘She would often say it’s far better to give than receive because there are no strings and I don’t know anyone as incredibly unique as the Princess.
“But on a daily basis I would have to dry her tears.
“I don’t think she would mind me telling you about this – because this was the woman I knew, she had bulimia until the day she died.”
Mr Burrell also stressed that Diana did not engage in any extra-marital affairs until her marriage was over.
He added: “She wanted to be told that she was beautiful and she wanted to be loved. She wanted someone to put their arms around her.
“But to defend her memory I must say that she never took another lover until her marriage to Charles was over. This is important because she didn’t do anything until the marriage was over.”
Before her death, Diana described Mr Burrell as her “rock”.
However, Prince William and Prince Harry later publicly accused him of “cold and overt betrayal” after he published a series of intimate revelations about their mother.
